Leech Lake is the 3rd largest in-state lake within Minnesota. The lake is Approximately 111,500 acres in size and can be up too 150 feet deep. The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and their ancestors have been connected to this land for thousands of years. The water is clean, the fish are big, and you can always find somewhere to explore. Leech Lake has several arms or bays. There is Steamboat Bay, Walker Bay, Kabekona Bay, Traders Bay, and Shingobee Bay to name a few. Everyday you can explore on Leech Lake. Make sure to have a backup motor or trolling motor, and check the weather.
Walker, MN is the largest town on Leech Lake. There is a great grocery store. The downtown has nice shops and restaurants with an upscale fisherman vibe. The town is on Walker Bay which provides some shelter from the wind compared to the main lake. Several resorts and rentals can be found in or around Walker on Leech Lake. These private access points often have boats or pontoons to rent.
There are State, Federal, and Tribal Jurisdictions on Leech Lake. Make sure to check out Stoney Point Campground and Recreation area East of Walker, MN. This unique place is in the Chippewa National Forest. From Stoney Point you can easily access the Main Lake of Leech. The North East side of Lake Portage Bay and Federal Dam offer a great opportunity for fishing. If you don’t have a big boat to get around the lake, there are several resorts and a campgrounds. Leech Lake and the Leech River head east continuing to intertwine with the Mississippi River water shed. Leech Lake is a great place to explore and get away, and that’s not going to change any time soon.
